India has the potential to support three major national airlines, according to Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings. He said the country’s expanding aviation market and rising passenger demand could create room for multiple large carriers, even as the sector remains dominated by a few major players.

Speaking about the outlook for Indian aviation, Bansal said the country deserves three national carriers. His comments come amid ongoing changes in the airline industry, with IndiGo holding a leading market position, Air India expanding under the Tata Group and Akasa Air building its network.
Adani Rules Out Entry into Airline Business
Bansal also ruled out the Adani Group entering the airline business. He said operating an airline would mean competing with the group’s airport customers, making such a move strategically unsuitable.
Adani Airport Holdings operates a portfolio of airports across India and has been expanding its presence in the country’s aviation infrastructure sector. Its airport business depends on serving multiple airlines through passenger facilities, airport services and commercial operations.
According to Bansal, competing with airline customers would not be a sound business strategy for an airport operator. The group therefore intends to focus on developing and operating airport infrastructure rather than launching an airline.
India’s Aviation Market Continues to Expand
India is among the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, supported by rising incomes, increasing tourism, regional connectivity and growing demand for domestic and international travel.
IndiGo remains the country’s largest airline, while Air India is pursuing an expansion and modernisation strategy following its acquisition by the Tata Group. Akasa Air is also adding aircraft and routes as it seeks to strengthen its position in the market.
The growth in passenger traffic has increased the need for airport capacity, new terminals, runway upgrades and improved passenger services.
Airport Operators Focus on Infrastructure
Adani Airport Holdings has been investing in airport modernisation and expansion as air travel demand rises. The company operates airports including Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram and Mangaluru, among others.
The group’s strategy centres on expanding airport capacity, improving passenger experience and developing commercial opportunities around airport infrastructure.
Bansal’s remarks underline the distinction between airport operators and airlines in India’s aviation ecosystem. While the country may have room for more large carriers, Adani’s stated focus remains on building airport infrastructure that serves the entire airline industry.
