Indian Railways will withdraw the superfast status of two Jan Shatabdi Express trains operating in Kerala from January 1, 2027. The Thiruvananthapuram–Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram–Kannur services will be reclassified as ordinary Express trains, a move expected to reduce ticket fares by removing the additional superfast surcharge.

The decision comes as the Railways reviews train classifications based on prescribed average-speed requirements. Reports indicate that the two services do not meet the required threshold to retain their superfast status.
Fares Expected to Come Down
The removal of the superfast surcharge could reduce non-AC ticket fares by ₹15 and AC fares by up to ₹45. The actual fare payable will depend on the applicable class and ticket category.
Superfast trains carry an additional surcharge over the basic fare. Once the classification changes, passengers are expected to save this additional amount on eligible tickets.
New Train Numbers from January 1
Along with the classification change, both services will receive new train numbers.
- Thiruvananthapuram–Kozhikode Jan Shatabdi: 16376/16375
- Thiruvananthapuram–Kannur Jan Shatabdi: 16380/16379
Passengers travelling from January 1, 2027, should check the updated train numbers while booking tickets and verifying their reservations.
Schedules Expected to Remain Unchanged
The reclassification is not expected to affect the existing departure times or stoppages of the two services. Passengers should therefore be able to continue using the trains under their current schedules, subject to any separate railway updates.
The superfast classification is linked to prescribed average-speed criteria. The review is part of the Railways’ process of reclassifying services that do not meet the required standards.
The changes are expected to provide some fare relief to passengers who regularly use the two Jan Shatabdi trains connecting Kerala’s capital with northern parts of the state.
