Nike is stepping up its India strategy with the launch of Vegam Run, its first running shoe designed specifically for the Indian market. Priced at ₹3,795, the shoe will be available from November 1 through Flipkart and select retail outlets. The launch marks a new effort by the global sportswear company to connect with India’s growing running community and strengthen its position in the country’s expanding sportswear market.

The product was developed over approximately five months using feedback from Indian runners. Nike aims to offer a shoe that combines running performance with everyday comfort at a more accessible price point within its running footwear range.
Vegam Run Designed for Indian Runners
The new shoe focuses on cushioning, breathability and durability. It features an engineered mesh upper designed to provide lightweight ventilation, full-length foam cushioning for comfort and a textured rubber outsole intended to improve grip and durability.
Nike developed Vegam Run in collaboration with runners across India, gathering insights into their training routines, daily movement and footwear requirements. The design is intended to support regular running while remaining suitable for all-day wear.
The company has also highlighted the speed of the development process. Nike moved from the initial design brief to a confirmed product in 55 days, completing the journey from concept to launch in around five months. The shoe will initially be launched in India, with plans to introduce it in additional international markets in 2027.
Nike Targets India’s Growing Running Market
India’s running community has been expanding, supported by organised races, fitness awareness and growing participation in recreational sports. Nike is seeking to tap this demand with a product designed around local consumer preferences.
The launch also reflects the company’s broader strategy of developing market-specific products rather than relying entirely on globally designed collections. Localised designs could help Nike attract new customers and compete more effectively with international and domestic sportswear brands.
The Vegam Run will receive wider distribution through Nike’s retail partners in India in spring 2027. The company plans to introduce additional colour options, including a special edition associated with its After Dark Tour running event in Mumbai.
Bengaluru Campus to Strengthen India’s Role
Earlier in October, Nike announced plans to establish a new campus in Bengaluru by fiscal 2028. The facility is expected to support its Nike, Jordan and Converse brands, bringing India-based employees together to strengthen local operations, partnerships and product capabilities.
Nike has identified India as both a growth market and a manufacturing hub, citing its talent base and potential to support global operations. The Bengaluru campus is expected to bring the company closer to local consumers while strengthening its ability to develop products and capabilities for India and other markets.
Nike Seeks New Growth Engines Amid Global Sales Pressure
Nike’s India push comes as the company faces challenges in several major markets, particularly China, where sales have declined for nine consecutive quarters. The weakness has increased pressure on the company to identify new growth opportunities and improve its product offering.
Nike’s global running business has been a relative bright spot, recording double-digit growth for six consecutive quarters. However, the company has warned that growth in performance products is not yet sufficient to offset weakness in its sportswear and Jordan businesses, alongside challenges in Greater China.
With the launch of Vegam Run and plans for a Bengaluru campus, Nike is increasing its focus on India as a market for consumer growth, product development and operational expansion. The success of this strategy will depend on whether locally designed products can attract more customers and translate India’s growing interest in running into sustained sales.
