Tata Power Company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to develop power infrastructure for BPCL’s Petro Resid Fluidised Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU) project at its Mumbai Refinery.

The agreement aims to provide a reliable electricity supply for the refinery’s major expansion project, supporting its operations and future energy requirements.
₹250 Crore Investment in Power Infrastructure
According to an official statement, Tata Power and BPCL will jointly invest approximately ₹250 crore to develop 110 kV power infrastructure.
The new infrastructure will meet the refinery project’s electricity requirement of 90 megawatts (MW).
The development work is expected to be completed within 24 months.
Under the agreement, Tata Power will handle the design and development of the necessary electrical infrastructure and provide 110 kV power connectivity to the refinery project.
BPCL’s ₹14,203 Crore Refinery Project
The PRFCCU project is one of BPCL’s largest ongoing investments, with an estimated cost of ₹14,203 crore.
The facility will have a processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA).
According to Tata Power, it is BPCL’s second-largest project currently under development and the biggest project ever undertaken at the company’s Mumbai Refinery.
The expansion is expected to improve the refinery’s ability to process petroleum products and produce more valuable outputs.
Supporting India’s Energy Security
The PRFCCU project is designed to increase the production of higher-value petroleum products and support BPCL’s expansion into petrochemicals.
It is also expected to strengthen domestic production, reduce dependence on certain imported products and contribute to India’s energy security.
The development forms part of BPCL’s efforts to improve refinery efficiency and expand its presence in the petrochemical industry.
Tata Power Plans 400 kV Transmission Facility in Trombay
Apart from the BPCL agreement, Tata Power is planning another major power infrastructure project in Mumbai.
The company intends to develop a 400 kV transmission facility at Trombay over the next five years.
The proposed facility will improve electricity transmission and power evacuation capacity while supporting grid reliability.
It is also expected to strengthen electricity availability for Mumbai’s industrial and commercial sectors.
Strengthening Mumbai’s Industrial Infrastructure
The partnership between Tata Power and BPCL is expected to support the development of modern energy infrastructure in Mumbai.
While the ₹250 crore power project will meet the electricity needs of BPCL’s refinery expansion, Tata Power’s proposed Trombay transmission facility will help strengthen the city’s wider power network.
Together, these developments are aimed at improving industrial power supply, supporting refinery operations and strengthening India’s energy infrastructure.
