Microsoft has introduced a voluntary exit programme for approximately 60,000 employees worldwide, including eligible staff in India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. The initiative comes as the technology company continues investing heavily in artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure while restructuring its workforce to meet changing business requirements.
The programme allows eligible employees to leave the company voluntarily with financial compensation and career transition support. Unlike traditional layoffs, employees can decide whether to accept the offer.

Microsoft Opens Voluntary Exit Programme for 60,000 Employees
Microsoft’s latest Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) covers approximately 60,000 employees, representing more than one-quarter of its global workforce.
The company reported around 223,000 full-time employees as of June 30, making this one of its largest voluntary separation initiatives.
Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the programme through an internal communication, explaining that it was intended to provide additional support for employees considering opportunities outside the company.
The programme is available for a limited period, and eligible employees can choose whether to participate.
Microsoft has not publicly disclosed the total financial cost of the initiative or the compensation packages offered across all participating countries.
Employees in India, US, UK and Canada Eligible
The voluntary exit programme is available to eligible Microsoft employees working in selected teams across four countries.
These include India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.
Employees at internal job level 70 and below can apply, subject to their team’s eligibility under the programme.
According to company communications, this category generally includes employees at the vice president level and below.
Microsoft employees working in other regions, including parts of Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, are not included in the current programme.
The company has not revealed the exact number of eligible employees in each country.
Indian Employees Offered Salary-Based Severance Packages
Microsoft has outlined specific financial and career support benefits for eligible employees in India.
Under the standard severance arrangement, participating Indian employees will receive one month of base salary for every completed year of service.
For example, an employee who has completed five years at Microsoft would receive five months of base salary under this formula.
The package also includes health insurance benefits and career transition assistance to help employees explore new employment opportunities.
Eligible Indian employees must decide whether to accept the voluntary exit offer by December 1, 2026.
The company has not disclosed how many employees in India are expected to participate.
Microsoft’s AI Investments Drive Workforce Changes
The voluntary exit initiative comes as Microsoft continues expanding its artificial intelligence and cloud computing businesses.
Technology companies worldwide are reviewing their workforce structures as AI tools increasingly influence software development, business operations and productivity.
Microsoft has been investing heavily in AI infrastructure, data centres and advanced technologies while adjusting its workforce to support changing priorities.
The latest exit programme provides employees with an opportunity to leave voluntarily as the company reorganises its operations.
The announcement also comes ahead of Microsoft’s fiscal first-quarter earnings report, which investors are expected to examine for signs of returns from the company’s AI investments.
Microsoft Plans $20.5 Billion Investment in India
Despite including Indian employees in the voluntary exit programme, Microsoft has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding operations and technology investments in the country.
According to a company spokesperson quoted by Business Standard, Microsoft has committed $20.5 billion in investments in India between 2025 and 2029.
The investment plans cover cloud computing, artificial intelligence infrastructure, employee training and business operations.
Microsoft also aims to provide AI-related skills training to 20 million people in India by 2030.
The company said it continues to invest in India’s technology and talent ecosystem even as it introduces voluntary workforce changes.
Microsoft Introduced Similar Exit Programme Earlier This Year
The latest voluntary exit initiative follows another employee separation programme launched by Microsoft in April 2026.
That programme was reportedly the first voluntary buyout initiative in the company’s 51-year history.
It covered approximately 8,750 employees in the United States, representing around seven percent of Microsoft’s American workforce.
Eligibility for the earlier programme was based on a different formula, requiring an employee’s age and completed years of service at Microsoft to total at least 70.
The latest programme instead uses internal job levels and team eligibility to determine participation.
Microsoft also eliminated approximately 15,000 positions across two rounds of workforce reductions in 2025.
CEO Satya Nadella previously linked the company’s restructuring efforts to changing business priorities, including increased investment in artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure.
Microsoft Continues Hiring Despite Voluntary Exit Offer
Although Microsoft is offering voluntary separation packages, the company has said it continues recruiting employees for different roles.
In a LinkedIn post, Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said Microsoft welcomed approximately 1,600 new employees between October 19 and October 23.
She explained that the company continues to see value in recruiting early-career professionals, even as artificial intelligence changes the nature of work.
Microsoft believes new employees will play an important role in developing future technologies and supporting the company’s long-term growth.
The combination of hiring and voluntary exits suggests that Microsoft is adjusting the skills and roles within its workforce rather than stopping recruitment entirely.
What the Voluntary Exit Programme Means for Indian Employees
For eligible Microsoft employees in India, the programme provides an option to leave the company with financial and professional support.
The severance amount will depend on completed years of service, while additional benefits include health insurance and career transition assistance.
Employees must review their eligibility and decide whether to accept the offer before the December 1 deadline.
The programme does not require all eligible employees to leave, and participation remains voluntary.
Microsoft has not announced how many employees are expected to accept the offer or how the programme will affect its overall workforce.
As the company continues expanding its AI and cloud businesses, the voluntary exit initiative reflects its efforts to reorganise teams while maintaining investment in new technologies and future talent.
