Tamil Nadu has moved a step closer to developing a new airport to serve Rameswaram, with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) applying to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for site clearance for a proposed facility at Manikaneri in Ramanathapuram district. The airport is planned across approximately 600 acres, with land acquisition work underway.

The proposed airport aims to improve access to Rameswaram, which attracts pilgrims and tourists from across India and abroad. Key destinations in the region include Ramanathaswamy Temple, Dhanushkodi and the memorial of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
Manikaneri Selected After Site Assessment
Manikaneri was selected after authorities assessed potential locations for the airport. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) evaluated possible sites and recommended Manikaneri as a suitable location following its assessment. The site is near Keelakarai in Ramanathapuram district.
The state government had earlier considered multiple locations before narrowing the options. TIDCO has been coordinating preliminary work and pursuing the approvals required to advance the project.
Site Clearance Is a Key Approval Stage
The application for site clearance is an important regulatory step, but it does not mean construction can begin immediately. The project will require further approvals, including in-principle approval, before development can proceed.
An Obstacle Limitation Surface survey is also part of the process to assess structures and other obstructions that could affect aircraft operations. Details such as the final project cost, construction schedule and expected start of flight operations have not been announced.
Airport Aims to Boost Tourism and Connectivity
Rameswaram currently depends largely on road and rail connectivity. A new airport could provide an additional travel option for pilgrims and tourists, potentially reducing journey times and supporting economic activity in the region.
The proposal comes as Tamil Nadu continues to pursue transport infrastructure projects aimed at improving regional connectivity. For now, the immediate priority is securing the required clearances for the Manikaneri site before the project can move into subsequent development stages.
