India is planning to develop an indigenous high-speed bullet train with a design speed of 350 kmph by 2030, according to the Railway Ministry’s proposal linked to the revised Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project. The train, known as B35, is being developed to match the design speed of Japan’s next-generation E10 series.
The development comes as India expands its capabilities in high-speed rail technology. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor will initially operate with B28 trains, which have a design speed of 280 kmph and a maximum operating speed of 249 kmph. BEML has received contracts to manufacture 47 B28 trains, with prototypes expected to undergo trials in 2027.
India is also working on the Bharat Train Control System (BTCS), an indigenous train-control and signalling system for high-speed and conventional rail networks.
The 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor has a design speed of 350 kmph and an operational speed of 320 kmph. The full corridor is targeted for completion by December 2030.
The B35 programme could mark a further shift towards developing high-speed rolling stock and supporting technologies within India.
