Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has launched the indigenous research vessel ‘Sagar Manthan’, marking another step forward in India’s domestic shipbuilding and ocean research capabilities.

The vessel is designed to support marine and oceanographic research, providing a platform for scientific studies and the collection of data from the sea.
The launch also highlights the growing role of Indian shipyards in building specialised vessels for research and other strategic maritime requirements.
With increasing focus on ocean exploration, marine resources and scientific research, indigenous research vessels can help India strengthen its understanding of the country’s maritime environment while reducing dependence on foreign-built platforms.
GRSE’s latest vessel adds to India’s expanding indigenous shipbuilding ecosystem and supports the broader push for self-reliance in the maritime sector.
