Maruti Suzuki India has taken a strong lead in India’s electric passenger vehicle exports, with its e Vitara electric SUV accounting for 97% of the country’s EV exports in the first quarter of FY27.
The company exported 15,210 electric passenger vehicles between April and June, out of India’s total EV exports of 15,641 units. Other major carmakers together exported only 431 electric vehicles during the period.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles exported 401 units, while Hyundai Motor India shipped 24 units and Kia India exported six. Mahindra & Mahindra did not record any electric vehicle exports during the quarter.
e Vitara Drives Maruti’s EV Export Growth
Maruti Suzuki had already established a strong position in electric vehicle exports in FY26. The company exported 25,549 electric cars out of India’s total 28,652 units, giving it an 89% share.
During FY26, Tata Motors exported 2,518 electric cars, followed by Hyundai with 298 units, Mahindra with 275 units and Kia India with 12 units.
Maruti Suzuki began exporting the e Vitara in August 2025, around six months before its launch in the Indian market. By June 2026, cumulative exports of the electric SUV had reached 40,759 units, with the model being shipped to around 48 countries.
e Vitara Among India’s Top Exported Cars
The e Vitara has also emerged as one of India’s biggest passenger vehicle exports across all fuel types.
In Q1 FY27, it was the third-largest exported passenger vehicle from India, with 15,210 units shipped overseas. It was behind the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, which recorded 23,803 exports, and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, which recorded 21,840 units.
Maruti Suzuki exported nearly 1.25 lakh cars to around 120 markets in Q1 FY27, supported by factors such as product quality, technology and the global strength of the Suzuki brand.
The company exported 4.47 lakh cars in FY26, including both electric and conventional vehicles, marking a 35% year-on-year increase. It has also remained India’s largest passenger vehicle exporter for five consecutive years.
India Is the Global Production Hub for e Vitara
Maruti Suzuki is Suzuki Motor Corporation’s exclusive global manufacturing hub for the e Vitara. The electric SUV is manufactured at the company’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat and exported to several international markets.
The United Kingdom and Japan are among its major export destinations. The e Vitara is also shipped to Germany, France, Denmark, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria and Belgium.
The electric SUV is available with 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery packs using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology. It offers a claimed driving range of more than 500 km on a single full charge.
Domestic EV Market Tells a Different Story
Despite its strong export performance, Maruti Suzuki has a smaller presence in India’s domestic electric car market.
India’s electric passenger vehicle retail sales increased 84% year-on-year to around 2 lakh units in FY26, according to FADA.
Tata Motors led the market with 78,811 units, followed by JSW MG with 53,089 units and Mahindra with 42,721 units. Maruti Suzuki, which launched the e Vitara in February, sold 1,416 electric vehicles during the financial year.
The company improved its position to fourth place in Q1 FY27, recording domestic retail sales of 4,894 electric vehicles. Tata Motors led with 32,283 units, followed by Mahindra with 20,112 units and JSW MG with 16,502 units.
This highlights a sharp contrast in Maruti Suzuki’s EV performance, with the e Vitara emerging as a major success in overseas markets while the company continues to build its position in India’s growing electric vehicle market.
