India’s growing semiconductor capabilities are playing a direct role in its space programme, with domestically designed and manufactured chips supporting lunar and solar missions, satellites and launch vehicles. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the contribution of Indian-made semiconductor technology on National Space Day, underlining its importance to the country’s push for technological self-reliance.

Indian Chips Enter India’s Space Missions
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said domestically manufactured semiconductor components are increasingly being deployed across India’s space ecosystem. These components are designed to meet the demanding conditions of space and support critical functions during missions.
A major contribution comes from the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali, which develops and manufactures flight-grade semiconductor components capable of operating under the extreme conditions encountered in space.
Chandrayaan 3 Used Indian Camera Chip
India’s indigenous semiconductor capabilities have already supported major space missions. The Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander carried an Indian-made camera chip developed by SCL Mohali for its imaging systems during its mission to the lunar surface.
The deployment marked an important example of locally developed semiconductor technology being used in a high-profile space exploration mission.
Aditya L1 Uses Indigenous ADC Chips
India’s solar mission Aditya-L1 also relies on domestically manufactured semiconductor technology. The spacecraft uses radiation-hardened Analogue-to-Digital Converter (ADC) chips produced by SCL for scientific observations of the Sun.
These components are designed to withstand radiation and other challenging conditions encountered during space operations.
Vikram Processor Supports Launch Vehicles
India’s indigenous semiconductor technology is not limited to scientific instruments. The Vikram processor developed by SCL is used in satellite launch vehicles and rockets, providing onboard computing capabilities needed during missions.
Its deployment highlights how Indian-made semiconductor components are being integrated into different stages of the country’s space infrastructure.
Semiconductor Push Strengthens Space Self Reliance
The growing use of locally designed and manufactured space-grade chips is strengthening India’s technological independence and reducing reliance on imported components for critical space applications.
As India prepares for more ambitious space exploration and launch missions, indigenous semiconductor technology is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting satellites, spacecraft, scientific instruments and launch vehicles.
