A high-level Meta delegation led by Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan met the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary S. Krishnan in New Delhi to explain the erroneous removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s video from Facebook. The meeting lasted around 45 minutes, with Meta outlining the reasons behind the incident.
The meeting follows heightened scrutiny from the Indian government and Parliament after the temporary takedown of the Prime Minister’s video. Meta has attributed the removal to a technical error and has expressed regret over the incident. The company’s representatives were also scheduled to meet Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw later in the day.
Separately, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology sought an unconditional apology from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the incident and raised broader concerns about content moderation, platform accountability and safeguards against erroneous takedowns of high-profile public content.
