A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology has sought a personal apology from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook video. The panel described the incident as a serious matter and questioned the functioning of the platform’s content moderation systems.
The committee, chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, reportedly rejected Meta’s explanation that the removal was caused by a technical glitch. It has asked the company to provide a detailed written response and warned that failure to adequately address the issue could lead to a review of Meta’s safe harbour protection under Section 79 of the Information Technology Act.
The controversy stems from the temporary disappearance of a Facebook video posted by Prime Minister Modi. Although Meta restored the content and expressed regret, the incident has intensified scrutiny of how global social media platforms moderate politically significant content in India.
