Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered cases against Meta India’s head and several social media users over the alleged circulation of morphed and objectionable videos targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The action follows complaints filed by BJP workers, according to reports.
Police registered two separate cases under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act against the administrators of the social media accounts involved. Meta India’s head has also been named as a co-accused in both cases.
Investigators said a notice has been issued to Meta seeking details related to the reported links and accounts. Police are also working to identify the accused and proceed with further legal action.
In a separate development, a Zero FIR was registered in Noida against a woman accused of making abusive remarks against Prime Minister Modi during a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
The complaint, filed by a Ghaziabad resident at the Expressway police station, alleged that the accused used objectionable language against the Prime Minister on July 23, insulting the constitutional office and attempting to incite hatred and disturb public peace.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under Sections 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), 353(1) (statements conducing to public mischief), and 356(1) (defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Authorities are continuing their investigation into both cases.
