Japan’s Shinkansen bullet trains are known worldwide for their speed, efficiency and punctuality, but engineers once faced a major challenge as trains became faster. When high-speed trains exited tunnels, they created a powerful pressure wave known as a tunnel boom, causing loud noises that disturbed nearby communities.

The solution came from an unexpected source, a small bird called the kingfisher. Eiji Nakatsu, the chief engineer behind the 500 Series Shinkansen and a birdwatcher, observed how kingfishers dive from air into water at high speed without creating a splash. He realised the bird’s streamlined beak helped it move smoothly between two different environments by reducing sudden pressure changes.
Inspired by the kingfisher’s design, engineers redesigned the front nose of the Shinkansen with a longer, streamlined shape. The new design reduced tunnel noise while also improving the train’s performance. The upgraded train could travel around 10% faster and use nearly 15% less electricity.
Engineers also studied other natural designs, including owl feathers, to reduce noise from the train’s pantograph, the device connecting it to overhead power lines.
The kingfisher-inspired Shinkansen became one of the world’s most famous examples of biomimicry, showing how solutions found in nature can help create faster, quieter and more efficient technologies.
