The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Mahendragiri (F38), the sixth Project 17A indigenous stealth frigate, into its Eastern Fleet at Visakhapatnam. The commissioning ceremony, presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, marks a significant step in India’s drive towards defence self-reliance and indigenous warship construction.

Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), INS Mahendragiri incorporates advanced stealth features, state-of-the-art sensors, integrated weapon systems and enhanced survivability. More than 75% of the ship’s components are indigenous, highlighting the success of India’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The frigate is capable of conducting anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare operations, while also supporting maritime surveillance, escort duties, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions. Its induction significantly enhances the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region.
INS Mahendragiri is the latest addition to the Project 17A programme, reflecting India’s continued investment in advanced naval platforms and reinforcing its position as a leading maritime power with a strong focus on indigenous defence technology.
