Prabhjeet Singh, former President of Uber India & South Asia, has stepped down from Uber and will take on a new role as Managing Director for OpenAI’s India operations.

New Role at OpenAI
Prabhjeet Singh will join OpenAI in September and report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific.
In his new role, Prabhjeet Singh will lead OpenAI’s business in India, focusing on consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement, and overall operations. He will also work on expanding partnerships across India’s AI ecosystem and driving adoption of OpenAI tools across businesses, institutions, government bodies, and consumers.
Exit from Uber After Long Tenure
Singh has left Uber after nearly 11 years with the company. He served as President of Uber India & South Asia from 2020, overseeing one of the company’s most important global markets.
Uber thanked Prabhjeet Singh for his contributions and highlighted his role in strengthening its presence in India.
Career Journey
Prabhjeet Singh joined Uber in 2015 after working with McKinsey & Company. Earlier in his career, he also worked at Lehman Brothers.
At Uber, he played a key role in expanding operations across Indian cities and later led the company’s business across India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
Uber India Under His Leadership
During his tenure, Uber expanded beyond traditional ride-hailing into services such as Auto, Moto, and Shuttle. The company also focused on electric mobility, affordability, and partnerships with India’s digital public infrastructure.
At the same time, Uber faced rising competition in India from rivals like Rapido, particularly in the bike taxi segment.
Business Challenges
Uber India has continued to report losses despite revenue growth. Rising competition and higher costs, including driver incentives, have added pressure on profitability.
Move to OpenAI
Prabhjeet Singh’s transition to OpenAI marks a shift from mobility to artificial intelligence, as India becomes one of the fastest-growing markets for AI adoption.
OpenAI is expanding its presence in India, driven by strong demand from startups, enterprises, and government institutions. The new Managing Director will focus on strengthening partnerships, expanding ecosystem presence, and accelerating adoption of AI tools across sectors.
Outlook
With Prabhjeet Singh leading its India operations, OpenAI is expected to deepen partnerships and scale its presence across the country’s fast-growing AI landscape.
