Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky is preparing to launch a new artificial intelligence lab, stepping beyond his earlier role as an AI adopter and investor. The development, reported by Bloomberg and confirmed by sources to TechCrunch, places him among a growing group of Silicon Valley leaders seeking to build their own frontier AI systems rather than rely on existing ones.

While Airbnb has integrated AI-based coding tools into its operations, Chesky previously said the company had not entered into a large language model partnership because current offerings did not fully meet its requirements.
Longstanding ties with OpenAI leadership
Chesky has had close ties with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman for years, dating back to their introduction through Y Combinator in 2006, which also incubated Airbnb. Over time, he has acted as an informal advisor to Altman during OpenAI’s rapid growth phase.
He was also reportedly considered for a board position at OpenAI and played a role in supporting Altman during internal leadership turmoil, including helping rebuild support among key Silicon Valley figures after Altman was briefly removed as CEO.
Despite this history, Chesky now appears to be moving into direct competition with OpenAI and other leading AI labs.
Focus still unclear, but user experience likely central
The exact direction of Chesky’s AI lab has not been disclosed. However, reports suggest it may focus on user interaction and product design, areas closely aligned with his work at Airbnb.
This approach mirrors efforts by other new AI ventures exploring how users engage with AI systems, including startups developing new interfaces and assistant-driven experiences.
Chesky remains Airbnb CEO
Sources indicate that Chesky will continue serving as CEO of Airbnb and will not personally lead the new AI lab. Instead, he is expected to appoint a separate leader to run the initiative while he remains in his primary corporate role.
This setup means the new lab will operate alongside Airbnb, potentially competing with established AI companies while still being overseen at a strategic level by Chesky.
Silicon Valley’s expanding AI race
The move reflects a broader trend in Silicon Valley, where major founders and executives are increasingly investing in or launching independent AI research efforts, seeking to influence the next generation of computing platforms.
Airbnb and Chesky have not commented publicly on the development.
