Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has drawn attention for moving away from the state’s traditional political dress code of white shirt and veshti, opting instead for sharply tailored black and white suits during official meetings, public events, and rallies.
At a recent rally in Tiruchirappalli, Vijay addressed the change for the first time, saying his choice of clothing was intentional and symbolic. He explained that he would no longer be seen in multiple colours, describing the black and white look as a reflection of simplicity and clarity in his public life.
He said the monochrome outfit represents transparency and straightforwardness, adding that it is meant to mirror “black and white like our hearts,” and emphasising that there is nothing exclusive or symbolic of authority in wearing a suit.
The remarks came during his first major public rally after assuming office, where he also responded to critics and opposition parties, accusing them of reacting too quickly after the new government took charge.
Designer and inspiration behind the look
Vijay’s suit first gained attention during his oath-taking ceremony in Chennai. Reports suggest the look was inspired by his 2022 film Beast, where he played a RAW agent.
The outfits were designed by Chennai-based designers Zafir and Shadab, who shared visuals of the look on social media and called it a historic moment. The duo has previously worked with several film and sports personalities, including Ranbir Kapoor, Dulquer Salmaan, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, and Nagarjuna Akkineni.
The design has since sparked mixed reactions, with supporters seeing it as a modern political image shift, while others debate the break from Tamil Nadu’s long-standing traditional attire in politics.
