Hafeet Rail has started rail track-laying works on the UAE–Oman railway link, marking a key construction milestone for one of the Gulf’s most important cross-border infrastructure projects.

The joint venture between Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala Investment Company said the commencement of track installation signals steady progress toward completing a rail corridor designed to strengthen trade, logistics efficiency and passenger connectivity between the two countries.
Integrated transport corridor across two nations
Named after Jebel Hafeet, the project aims to create an integrated transport and logistics network connecting major industrial, commercial and population centres in the UAE and Oman.
The 238-kilometre railway will link the UAE national rail system with Oman, improving freight movement and supporting economic integration between Abu Dhabi and Sohar via Al Ain and Al Buraimi.
Progress on construction and earthworks
According to the company, the project had already reached 40 per cent completion as of April, with major progress in civil works, structural development and earthworks along the route.
So far, more than 27 million cubic metres of earthworks have been completed, along with over 10 million safe working hours recorded, reflecting large-scale construction activity across the corridor.
Passenger and freight services planned
The railway is designed to support both passenger and freight operations. Passenger trains are expected to run at speeds of up to 200 km/h, significantly reducing travel time between key destinations.
Freight services are expected to offer a faster and more sustainable alternative to road transport, improving supply chain efficiency across the region.
Boost to regional trade and logistics
The project is part of wider efforts by the UAE and Oman to strengthen transport infrastructure, enhance trade connectivity and position the two countries as strategic logistics hubs linking markets across the Gulf, Asia and Africa.
Once completed, the railway is expected to play a major role in deepening economic cooperation and improving regional mobility.
