Rekha Jhunjhunwala-backed wastewater treatment company VA Tech WABAG has announced a Bio-CNG project in Ghaziabad under its broader waste-to-energy initiative.

VA Tech WABAG, along with PEAK Sustainability Ventures, has launched its first Bio-CNG project in Ghaziabad as part of a larger plan to develop around 100 such plants across India and select global markets.
The project will be set up at a 70 MLD sewage treatment plant in Dundaheda under a public-private partnership using a Build-Operate-Transfer model. A special purpose vehicle, Ghaziabad Bioenergy Private Limited, has been formed to execute it.
The facility will capture biogas generated at the sewage treatment plant and convert it into Bio-CNG for use in transport and industrial applications. It is expected to reduce around 250,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over its lifetime, with operations targeted to begin within a year.
WABAG will lead construction and manage operations and maintenance for 15 years, while PEAK Sustainability Ventures will provide strategic input, technology guidance, and support in raising climate-focused funding.
The management said the project strengthens its track record with Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam and highlights its execution strength in water and energy transition projects. PEAK described the initiative as a step toward converting wastewater methane into clean fuel, improving energy security and reducing pollution.
On the market side, sentiment stayed mildly positive, with the Nifty 50 closing slightly higher. WABAG shares also edged up following the announcement.
