Wing Commander Pooja Thakur (Retd.) is a former Indian Air Force officer widely recognised for making history as the first woman to lead the Tri-Services Guard of Honour. She came into the global spotlight during the ceremonial welcome of US President Barack Obama at Rashtrapati Bhavan in 2015, a moment seen as a milestone for gender representation in India’s armed forces.

Born in 1979 in Ajmer, Rajasthan, she grew up in a military family, with her father serving in the Indian Army. Frequent relocations during her childhood helped her develop resilience, discipline, and adaptability, qualities that later shaped her military career.

Alongside her service, she built a strong academic background, earning degrees in science and English, followed by an MBA in Personnel Management. She also completed a certification in media communication and attended advanced management programmes, giving her a strong foundation in administration, communication, and leadership.

She joined the Indian Air Force in 2000 and was commissioned in 2001 in the Administrative Branch under the Short Service Commission. Over her career, she worked in areas such as personnel management, procurement, public relations, and media coordination at Air Headquarters. In 2014, she was promoted to Wing Commander after years of distinguished service.

A defining moment in her career came in 2015 when she led the Tri-Services Guard of Honour for President Barack Obama’s ceremonial reception. Commanding personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, she executed the drill with precision, including issuing commands during the national anthem and the 21-gun salute. The event also symbolised India’s “Nari Shakti” theme, highlighting the growing role of women in defence services.

Beyond ceremonial duties, she contributed to public outreach initiatives of the IAF, including awareness campaigns and projects like the defence-themed game “Guardians of the Skies.” She was also part of the Air Force’s skydiving team and became the first woman officer to perform a microlight aircraft skydive, alongside participating in adventure sports such as rafting, skiing, and paragliding.

Her career also included a legal battle regarding the denial of Permanent Commission. After initially being refused, she approached the Armed Forces Tribunal, which ruled in her favour in 2017, reinforcing the rights of women officers. The case became part of a wider legal and policy shift supporting gender equality in the armed forces.

After retiring from the Air Force, she transitioned into roles as a motivational speaker and corporate trainer. She now speaks on leadership, resilience, empowerment, and personal growth at various platforms, including TEDx events, inspiring students and professionals alike.

Her journey stands as a powerful example of leadership, determination, and breaking barriers. Wing Commander Pooja Thakur continues to be seen as a trailblazer who helped redefine the role of women in India’s armed forces and beyond.
