BEML Limited has received an order worth more than Rs 5,400 crore from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) for India’s first bullet train project.
The order includes the supply and maintenance of high-speed trains and other related works for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor. BEML disclosed the order in a stock exchange filing on September 18.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor will cover around 508 km and connect major cities across Gujarat and Maharashtra, along with the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. NHSRCL is responsible for implementing the project.
BEML is also working on India’s first indigenously developed high-speed bullet train, known as the B28. The train is being manufactured at BEML’s Aditya High-Speed Rail Complex in Bengaluru.
The B28 is designed to reach a maximum test speed of 280 kmph, while its operational speed is expected to be more than 250 kmph. Trial runs of the train are expected to begin in May or June next year.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project is being developed with technical and financial support from Japan. The corridor is planned to have 12 stations, including Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.
The project is expected to bring high-speed rail connectivity between Mumbai and Ahmedabad and is being developed as India’s first bullet train corridor.
The first section of the project is expected to begin operations with a 100-km run between Surat and Vapi in August 2027.
The latest order strengthens BEML’s role in India’s growing high-speed rail programme and adds to the company’s work in developing indigenous railway technology.
