India is set to enter a new phase of aviation with the launch of its first commercial seaplane services, beginning in Lakshadweep.

The service will be operated by SkyHop Aviation, which has received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), allowing it to begin commercial operations.
In the initial phase, the seaplane network will connect five islands within Lakshadweep and link them to the Indian mainland, significantly improving travel in the remote archipelago.
These aircraft can take off and land on water, eliminating the need for traditional runways and making them ideal for regions with limited airport infrastructure.
The service will use 19-seater aircraft, offering faster connectivity, boosting tourism, and reducing travel time between islands.
This initiative marks a major step in expanding India’s regional connectivity and unlocking the potential of water-based aviation.
