Russia has signalled a major step in defence cooperation by offering India unrestricted technology transfer and production collaboration for the Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter and the SU-57 MKI heavy unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) package. Senior officials from Russia’s defence export agency and United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) outlined proposals that would allow India to receive Su-57 aircraft produced in Russia, followed by a phased shift to licensed local production at Indian aerospace facilities such as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The transfer offer reportedly covers a broad range of advanced technologies, including engines, AESA radar, optics, low signature systems, artificial intelligence elements and modern weapons integration, with flexibility to integrate Indian-made systems. Moscow has described Indian technical demands as “completely acceptable” and is open to joint development opportunities, including two-seat variants of the aircraft and co-production arrangements.
In the case of the SU-57 MKI UCAV, a stealthy heavy drone designed for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR) and precision strike roles, collaboration would further enhance India’s capabilities in unmanned combat systems. The SU-57 MKI ’s compatibility with the Su-57 in a Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) configuration could provide strategic advantages in future air operations, expanding India’s options for deep-strike and electronic warfare missions.
Discussions on these offers coincide with broader technical and strategic talks between India and Russia on joint defence projects, reflecting deep-rooted military cooperation and both nations’ interest in modernising airpower capabilities.
