Indian Railways has undergone a significant transformation since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014. One of the most notable changes is the replacement of diesel engines with electric trains, making the railway system more efficient and cost-effective.

Vande Bharat’s Role in Modernization

Vande Bharat, India’s first indigenous semi-high-speed train, has been a key part of this modernization. Launched on February 15, 2019, its fleet has grown to over 50 trains operating across various routes in India. These trains have completed around 40,000 trips, carrying over 4 crore passengers and covering a distance equal to 310.7 rounds of the Earth in the fiscal year 2023-24.

Growing International Interest

Vande Bharat’s success has attracted global attention. Countries like Chile, Canada, and Malaysia have shown interest in importing these trains due to their efficiency and advanced technology.

Electricity Consumption of Indian Trains

With the shift to electric trains, energy consumption has become a crucial factor. On average, an electric train requires 20 units of electricity to travel 1 kilometer. In the Ajmer railway division, the same consumption pattern has been observed.

Cost of Running Electric vs. Diesel Trains

Indian Railways pays Rs 6.50 per unit of electricity, making the cost of running an electric train Rs 130 per kilometer. In contrast, a diesel engine consumes 3.5 to 4 liters of fuel per kilometer, costing between Rs 350 and Rs 400 per kilometer. This makes electric trains a more economical and sustainable option for the future of Indian Railways.
