Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) has unveiled plans to invest ₹1,300 crore for the expansion of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (TRV).
Project Anantha
Named “Project Anantha,” this ambitious initiative aims to enhance the airport’s infrastructure significantly by 2027. A standout feature of the expansion will be a new terminal, designed to showcase Kerala’s cultural heritage. The architecture will draw inspiration from the state’s famous temples, featuring cascading steps and terraced levels.
Expansion Details
Currently, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport covers 45,000 square metres and serves around 3.2 million passengers annually. Following the expansion, the terminal area will grow to 165,000 square metres, with the capacity to handle up to 12 million passengers each year.
Construction is expected to commence within this financial year and will be completed by 2027. The new terminal will include modern facilities such as a plaza, a hotel, and additional administrative areas, all within a unified complex. Enhanced parking facilities will also be integrated into the upgrade to improve passenger and visitor experiences, according to a report by The Hindu.
Modernization Features
The expansion will further incorporate a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, an international cargo complex, and remote check-in services, contributing to a fully modernised airport experience.
AAHL’s Role
AAHL has been responsible for managing the operations and development of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport since October 2021. Established in 1932, TRV is the oldest airport in Kerala and was previously managed by the Airports Authority of India before the Adani Group’s takeover.
AAHL, which was founded in 2019 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Ltd, represents the Adani Group’s entry into the airport sector. The company manages five other significant airports: Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Mangaluru, Jaipur, and Guwahati, after securing concession agreements with the Airports Authority of India. Additionally, AAHL holds a 73% stake in Mumbai International Airport Ltd, which oversees 74% of Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd.
With a total of eight airports under its management, AAHL is now India’s largest airport infrastructure company, responsible for 25% of passenger traffic and 33% of air cargo.
