Air India Express, promoted by the Tata Group, is preparing to expand its international network further into Europe, with plans under evaluation to launch non-stop flights to Georgia during the upcoming winter schedule, according to sources familiar with the development.

While the airline has not responded to queries, officials indicated that the proposed move into Eastern Europe is part of a wider strategy to strengthen its short-to-medium haul international operations.

Focus on Network Expansion Across Key Regions

The expansion into Europe comes as Air India Express continues to rebuild and expand its global footprint. The airline has already restored nearly 80 percent of its West Asia operations and currently serves 13 destinations across the Gulf, maintaining a strong position on the India–Gulf travel corridor.

Southeast Asia is also emerging as a key growth market, with recent additions including Bangkok and Phuket. The airline is reportedly evaluating further expansion opportunities in Malaysia as part of its broader international push.

Domestic Growth Alongside International Push

Alongside its overseas expansion, Air India Express is preparing to add at least five new domestic stations in 2026. The airline currently operates across 43 domestic and 16 international destinations and is steadily building one of India’s largest short-haul networks spanning South Asia, Southeast Asia, West Asia, and potentially Eastern Europe.

Sources said the airline’s strategy is centred on “disciplined and sustainable growth” driven by network and fleet expansion while maintaining operational consistency and service standards.

Fleet Expansion and Rapid Growth Since Privatisation

Air India Express recently crossed the 100-aircraft milestone, with nearly two-thirds of its fleet consisting of next-generation aircraft. This expansion has improved operational efficiency and supported rapid capacity growth.

Since its privatisation in 2022, the airline has nearly doubled its capacity and tripled its market share, making it one of India’s fastest-growing carriers. Passenger traffic has also risen by more than 25 percent year-on-year, reflecting strong demand across its expanding network.

Strong Ratings and Value Carrier Positioning

The airline recently received a 4-star Skytrax rating in its first-ever audit, marking a significant milestone in its transformation from a small Kochi-based carrier into a pan-India and international operator.

Air India Express is positioning itself as a value carrier that sits between low-cost and full-service airlines, aiming to offer a differentiated product in the competitive aviation market.

Long-Term Growth Targets

Looking ahead, the airline has set an ambitious goal of capturing a 25 percent domestic market share by FY31. This expansion is expected to be supported by a planned fleet size of 300 aircraft, nearly three times its current scale, as it continues its long-term growth trajectory.
