Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has marked a significant chapter in the bilateral relations between India and the Gulf nation. From high-level diplomatic meetings to cultural milestones, the visit has been packed with notable events showcasing the growing partnership and camaraderie between the two countries.

Inauguration of UAE’s First Hindu Temple

One of the major highlights of PM Modi’s visit was the inauguration of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi. This historic moment witnessed an overwhelming influx of people, resonating with spirited “Modi-Modi” chants, as they eagerly awaited the ceremony. The BAPS Mandir, the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, has become a focal point of cultural and spiritual significance, attracting devotees from various corners. Swami Brahmaviharidas, a saint from BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir, emphasised the inclusivity of the temple, reflecting the cooperation and support from various quarters, including the Ruler of Abu Dhabi and the Indian Prime Minister.

Introducing UPI to UAE

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan introduced the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) RuPay card service in Abu Dhabi. This initiative aims to facilitate seamless financial transactions between India and the UAE, enhancing the ease of banking and digital payments for residents and businesses in both countries. The introduction of UPI in the UAE underscores the growing cooperation in financial technology between the two nations, fostering greater economic integration and convenience for individuals and businesses alike.

Expanding Educational Opportunities

In line with India’s commitment to promoting education and knowledge exchange, discussions have been held regarding the establishment of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools in the UAE. These schools, known for their quality education and adherence to national curriculum standards, would cater to the educational needs of Indian expatriate communities in the region. By providing access to CBSE-affiliated schools, Indian students in the UAE would benefit from a familiar educational framework while maintaining ties with their cultural heritage. Moreover, the establishment of CBSE schools reflects the deepening bilateral ties between India and the UAE, encompassing various sectors, including education.

Strengthening India-UAE Relations

PM Modi’s visit also underlined the deepening of India-UAE relations, characterised by trust and warmth between Prime Minister Modi and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. Former Indian Ambassador to UAE, Navdeep Suri, highlighted the dynamic and consequential nature of this relationship, which has opened up new avenues for cooperation. Notably, the UAE’s support in facilitating the construction of the Hindu temple underscores the country’s commitment to promoting interfaith harmony and cultural diversity.

Bilateral Meetings and Agreements

During his visit, PM Modi held high-level bilateral talks with UAE leaders, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The discussions covered a wide range of issues, including trade, investment, and regional cooperation. The signing of the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) and several other agreements further solidified the economic partnership between India and the UAE. Additionally, the launch of initiatives like the India-Middle East Economic Corridor (IMEC) and the interlinking of payment platforms demonstrate the commitment to enhancing connectivity and collaboration in key sectors.

Addressing Global Challenges

Apart from bilateral engagements, PM Modi also addressed global issues at the World Government Summit in Dubai. He emphasised the need for reform in global governance institutions to address emerging challenges such as AI, cybersecurity, and climate change. PM Modi’s remarks underscored India’s proactive role in shaping global discourse and advocating for the priorities of the Global South.

PM Modi’s visit to the UAE has not only strengthened bilateral ties but also celebrated cultural diversity and shared values between India and the Gulf nation. The inauguration of the BAPS Hindu Mandir symbolises the harmonious coexistence of different faiths in the UAE, while the bilateral agreements and discussions pave the way for enhanced cooperation in various fields. As India and the UAE forge ahead with their comprehensive strategic partnership, the visit serves as a testament to the enduring friendship and mutual respect between the two nations.
