Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has given approval for the introduction of a premium app-based bus service in the national capital, marking a significant milestone in the efforts to enhance public transport. This initiative, conceptualised by the Arvind Kejriwal government, holds the potential to reshape commuting habits, reducing reliance on private vehicles.
The Delhi Motor Vehicles Licensing of Aggregator (Premium Buses) Scheme, 2023
The scheme envisions a premium intra-city bus service, distinguishable by app-based bookings, no standing passengers, and higher fares compared to other buses, including those operated by the state government’s Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). Key safety features such as CCTV, GPS, and panic buttons will be integrated into these premium AC buses, which will also offer Wi-Fi connectivity.
Digital-First Approach
In a departure from traditional practices, the premium bus service will operate on a digital-first model. Payments and bookings will exclusively occur online, eliminating the need for physical tickets. Only passengers with prior online bookings will be permitted to board these buses, enhancing efficiency and convenience.
Flexibility and Dynamic Pricing
Under the scheme, licence holders will have the flexibility to determine routes and fares, with mandatory display of fares on the app. Dynamic pricing is introduced, allowing licence holders to adjust fares within certain limits, ensuring competitiveness without falling below the maximum fare set by the Delhi Transport Corporation.
Government’s Vision for Enhanced Public Transport
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed optimism about the transformative impact of the new service on the city’s public transport system. He anticipates a shift from private vehicles to buses, emphasising the government’s concerted efforts over the past four years to make this initiative meaningful.
The Road Ahead
Despite the widespread availability and expansion of the Delhi Metro, buses remain a popular choice for the city’s residents. With approximately 7,200 buses currently in operation under DTC and the cluster scheme, the state government aims to increase the fleet to 11,000 and ensure that 80% of all public buses in Delhi are electric by 2025.
The premium app-based bus service is not merely a mode of transport; it symbolises a shift towards sustainable and efficient commuting in Delhi. As the government addresses congestion issues and encourages public transportation, this initiative aligns with the broader vision of creating a more accessible and eco-friendly urban landscape.
