Tata-backed Air India is poised to undergo a significant rebranding today, with changes to its livery colors and logo. Reports suggest that while the iconic Maharaja mascot will persist, its role will be scaled down. This strategic move aligns with the recent changes in ownership, marking the Tata Group’s stewardship of the airline.

Rebranding Details

In the presence of Tata Group’s senior leadership, Air India will undergo its rebranding process. The current logo, a red swan with the distinctive orange Konark Chakra, is reportedly making way for a new livery adorned with a three-color combination—red, white, and purple. This transformation signifies a symbolic change, with red and white as Air India’s historical colors, and purple being inspired by Vistara Airline. This move anticipates a potential integration between Vistara and Air India, both under the Tata Group umbrella.

Maharaja Mascot’s Evolution

The beloved Maharaja mascot, created by Bobby Kooka in 1946, will continue to be part of the airline’s identity. The mascot, characterized by a potbellied figure, curling moustache, aquiline nose, and striped turban, will have a reduced presence, primarily in premium classes and airport lounges. This iconic figure has played a pivotal role in shaping Air India’s brand image.

Comprehensive Rebranding Journey

The rebranding process entails a holistic approach, encompassing various aspects of the airline’s identity. Alongside the livery and logo changes, Air India’s rebranding journey includes revamped cabin interiors, fresh crew uniforms, and updated insignia. These changes align with the airline’s aspirations to enhance its offerings and stay relevant in a dynamic market.

Tata Group’s Vision and Acquisition

The rebranding initiative gained momentum following Tata Sons’ complete acquisition of Air India in January 2022. Tata Sons, through its subsidiary Talace Private Limited, acquired a 100% stake in the airline. The Tata Group’s involvement in the rebranding process underscores its commitment to shaping Air India’s future, reflecting the group’s broader vision for the aviation sector.
