Indian Government to Regulate AI: Safeguarding Digital Citizens.

Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated on Friday (June 9) that the Indian Government will regulate Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure that it does not harm “digital citizens.”

The statement was made at a time when Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken over the world, particularly with the emergence of generative AI products like ChatGPT, prompting calls for regulating the technology.

“We will regulate AI as we will regulate Web3 or any emerging technologies to ensure that these technologies don’t harm digital nagriks,” Chandrasekhar stated in an address to a press conference regarding the accomplishments of the Center’s “Digital India” campaign over the past nine years.

The rise of AI has also sparked debates regarding its impact on employment worldwide. The Minister stated that, at the very least within the next five to ten years, the possibility of AI becoming intelligent enough to replace jobs is remote.

At the moment, AI is more task-oriented and increases productivity. He noted that the majority of jobs require logic and reasoning, which AI does not yet provide. However, he did not rule out the possibility that AI might one day acquire logic and reasoning capabilities.
