Twitter has announced plans to expand its community fact-checking program Birdwatch with a new form of content moderation. Twitter is reportedly expanding the program to half of all US users.
The company launched the Birdwatch project last year to give more context to misleading tweets by gathering more relevant information from viewers. Previously, only a few people could view Birdwatch notes, but all of them were published on the website at Birdwatch.
Birdwatch on Twitter previously had a limit of 15,000 contributors writing fact-checked notes. Birdwatch’s latest expansion plans will add approximately 1,000 new contributors each week. Twitter’s Birdwatch project brought audience interaction to the platform. More people are likely to like or retweet content and posts tagged in Birdwatch Notes.
