Tata Group is in talks with a Taiwanese supplier to Apple Inc. to set up an electronics manufacturing joint venture in India with the aim of assembling iPhones in the South Asian country.
Aiming to make Tata a technology manufacturing powerhouse, Tata group hopes to leverage the Taiwanese firm’s expertise in product development, supply chain and assembly. If the deal succeeds, Tata could become the first Indian company to manufacture iPhones. iPhones are now mostly assembled by Taiwanese manufacturing giants such as Wistron and Foxconn Technology Group in China and India. The Indian firm that makes the iPhone will be a big boost in the country’s efforts to challenge China, whose dominance in electronics manufacturing is threatened by the ongoing Covid-induced lockdown and political tensions with the US.
