From Mumbai to Chennai

According to a recent study, many Indian cities along the coast are likely to be flooded in the future. According to an analysis by RMSI, a global risk management firm, buildings and road networks in Mumbai, Mangalore, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram will be

Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram will sink

In Kochi, 464 buildings are likely to be affected by this phenomenon. During high tide, 1,502 buildings will be flooded. In Thiruvananthapuram, the sea level and tidal rises will likely affect 349 and 387 buildings respectively.

Major buildings to be drowned

The Haji Ali Dargah, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Western Express Highway, Bandra-Worli Sea-Link and the Queen’s Necklace in Marine Drive might submerge in Mumbai. According to the analysis, in Mumbai, 998 buildings and upto 24 km of roads will be affected by 2050. But during the high tide, 2,490 buildings and upto 126 km of roads will be affected. In Chennai, upto 5 km long road and 55 buildings are in danger. In Visakhapatnam, 206 buildings and upto 9 km of the road network might be inundated by 2050 due to coastal changes, the report said.

Global Warming- Major reason

The report cites global warming as a major reason for this. The amount of greenhouse gases, such as CO2, emitted by the world, is expected to increase by 2025. The report also points out that it would be beneficial to reduce global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius by 2100, with a 43% reduction in the next ten years. It also proposes to increase the height of roads, strengthen buildings or replace them to avoid damage. RMSI experts have made this report by using the creation of a high-resolution digital terrain model.
