For an entrepreneur or a tech enthusiast, the movie 3 idiots will sure be a treat. It is an ode to innovative minds and teaches you to follow excellence instead of success. An adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone, 3 idiots tells the story of three college friends and their journey. The movie is a lesson for entrepreneurs because it teaches one to learn engineering not to develop complex solutions, but to solve real-time problems faced by society.
The movie starts in Imperial College of Engineering, where three students, Ranchodas Chanchad, Farhan Qureshi, Raju Rastogi, meet. All three come from different societal backgrounds and hit it off in just a matter of days. Ranchodas aka Rancho is the smartest in the group. He prefers hands-on learning rather than conventional teaching methods and often expresses his disagreements before the faculty. His actions often result in him being bullied and Raju and Farhan, his friends are also not spared. The movie progresses with their friendship, love, academics and career prospects.
The movie is a satire on the conventional Indian education system. It criticises the practice of categorising students with their GPA (Grade Point Average) as the benchmark. It tries to convey that it’s not about grades but applying one’s knowledge. The three protagonists of the movie are the epitome of entrepreneurship, passion and innovation.
The movie follows a non-linear narrative. Based on the graduation life of three students, it occasionally takes a dig at the forced teaching method of Indian education system. The movie begins with Rancho, Farhan Qureshi and Raju Rastogi developing a friendship at Imperial College of Engineering.
Rancho is always thrown out of the classroom as he constantly points out the flaws in education system. Since he believes that education can be received from anywhere, he would even attend class with his seniors. After his senior, Joy Lobo commits suicide due to over pressure, Rancho raises his voice against the system. Dr Viru SahastraBudhe, the director of the college, considers Rancho as his archenemy. Nicknamed as Virus, Viru tries to belittle Rancho’s out-of-the-box concepts.
Dr Veeru sends a warning letter to both Raju’s and Farhan’s parents. The parents chide the trio. Rancho realises that Farhan wanted to be a wildlife photographer but joined engineering to fulfil his father’s wish. Meanwhile, Raju attempts suicide due to the pressure in college. Scenes where he is hospitalised in comatose are heart-melting. Rancho encourages Farhan to face his fears and to have a conversation with his father. Farhan manages to convince his father about his decision to chase his passion and Raju gets appointed in a good company through campus selection. Later on, they part ways.
10 years after Rancho’s disappearance, Farhan and Raju manage to find him where many surprises await them. They come to know that Rancho’s real name is Phunkshuk Wangdu and that he joined engineering college as an impostor. As the film progresses to climax, Rancho is shown as a scientist, who runs a school in Ladakh where he teaches children innovation and science.
The movie 3 idiots for sure is a fun treat to the audience. It is a textbook on self-reliance and the pressure exerted by the current education system. Friendship, education, passion, profession entrepreneurship are the main highlights of the movie. Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Shraman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani and Omi Vaidya are the lead actors of the movie, which is an unofficial adaptation of the popular novel, Five Point Someone, penned by Chetan Bhagat. Three idiots is a reminder that passion should be the foundation for profession and your profession should spread the air of innovation around the world.
