Indian authorities have initiated a criminal investigation against the owner, captain, and crew of the containership MSC Elsa 3, which sank off the coast of Kochi on May 25, 2025.
Ship Sank En Route from Vizhinjam to Cochin
The incident occurred about 13 nautical miles from Kerala’s coastline. The vessel developed a heavy tilt to the starboard side on May 24 and sank the following day while travelling from Vizhinjam to Cochin.

All Crew Members Rescued
All 24 crew members were safely rescued by the Indian Coast Guard. There were no reported casualties.
Charges Include Reckless and Negligent Navigation
A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under several sections of the Indian Penal Code. The charges include reckless navigation, negligence in handling dangerous substances, and creating risks for public navigation. Authorities allege the ship was knowingly operated despite carrying hazardous cargo.
Environmental and Navigational Damage Reported
The ship’s sinking resulted in the release of hazardous plastics into the sea, disruption of local fishing activities, and obstruction of marine shipping routes.
Hazardous Cargo Included Calcium Carbide
Thirteen of the containers on board were identified as hazardous. These included shipments of Calcium Carbide, a chemical that reacts violently with water and produces flammable gas, raising concerns of environmental and safety threats.
Investigation Underway by Coastal Police
The investigation began on June 10 following instructions from the Inspector General of Kerala Coastal Police. Authorities will be recording statements from MSC shipping company representatives, the vessel’s master, and the crew.
Salvage Operation and Oil Recovery Directive
Salvage work is currently in progress. Authorities have issued a 48-hour deadline to recover oil from the wreck to prevent further environmental damage, especially before the expected arrival of monsoon conditions.
