Smoke, Panic as Air India Plane Crashes in Gujarat

The Air India flight was en route to the UK when it crashed near Ahmedabad; 242 passengers were onboard and rescue efforts are currently in progress.

An Air India flight en route to the United Kingdom crashed near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, shortly after takeoff. The incident occurred near the Forensic Cross Road in Meghaninagar, close to Dharpur, where eyewitnesses reported thick smoke rising from the site.

Immediate Rescue Operations

Emergency teams, including police, fire brigade, and medical services, rushed to the crash site. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that there were 242 passengers onboard. The State Police Control Room has also confirmed the crash. Details regarding survivors or casualties are yet to be released.

Flight Operations Affected

Operations at the Ahmedabad airport have reportedly been temporarily suspended following the crash. Visuals from the scene have surfaced on social media, showing chaos and rescue efforts in progress.

Recent Global Plane Crashes

The Ahmedabad crash adds to a series of tragic aviation incidents in recent years:

  • March 2025 (Honduras): A Lanhsa Airlines plane crashed into the sea near Roatan, killing 12 of the 17 onboard.
  • January 2025 (USA): An American Airlines jet collided with a US Army Black Hawk near Washington D.C., resulting in over 60 deaths.
  • December 2024 (South Korea): 179 people died after a plane crash-landed at Muan Airport and caught fire.
  • December 2024 (Kazakhstan): An Azerbaijan Airlines plane crashed near Aktau due to technical issues and bad weather, killing 38.
  • August 2024 (Brazil): Voepass Flight 2283 crashed in São Paulo, killing all 62 passengers.
  • August 2020 (Calicut, India): An Air India Express flight crash-landed in heavy rain, killing 21 people.
