The Chennai-Surat Expressway is one of the biggest infrastructure projects being developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). This greenfield, access-controlled expressway will cover around 1,271 kilometers, connecting Chennai in Tamil Nadu to Surat in Gujarat.
Covers Six Key States
The expressway will pass through six states: Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Its 8-lane design aims to improve long-distance connectivity across southern and western India.
Built to Reduce Congestion
Once operational, the expressway will significantly cut travel time between Chennai and Surat by nearly 6 hours. It will help vehicles bypass major congested urban centers like Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, thereby easing the load on existing national highways such as NH-44 and NH-16.
Second Longest Expressway in India
At 1,271 kilometers, it will become India’s second longest expressway after the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Construction is progressing in phases, with Package IV nearing completion.
Project Cost and Timeline
The project is being constructed at an estimated cost of ₹45,000 crore. It is expected to be completed by 2027 and is likely to play a major role in boosting trade and industrial activity between the southern and western regions of the country.
