According to G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant, India needs to maintain sovereignty in technology and avoid dependency on other countries. Speaking at Startup Mahakumbh in New Delhi, he emphasized that India must not become a technological colony of the West or any other global power.

Push for Indigenous AI Models

Kant highlighted the importance of developing India’s own artificial intelligence infrastructure. He noted that with India’s vast and diverse datasets, the country has the potential to create AI models that reflect local realities and are free from foreign biases. He stressed the need to build an “end-to-end AI ecosystem” rather than relying solely on applications.

Deep Tech as a Strategic Focus

Startups were encouraged to enter areas like AI, machine learning, blockchain, big data, and other advanced technologies. Kant described these sectors as critical for disruption and essential for India to emerge as a leader in deep technology.

Economic Opportunity in Sunrise Sectors

India should focus on emerging sectors such as electric mobility, battery storage, green hydrogen, and circular economy, Kant said. He referenced China’s dominance in key markets, holding 70% of solar, 74% of battery, and 80% of electric vehicle production, as a challenge India must address.

Need for Good Governance in Startups

Kant also urged startups to prioritize ethical business practices and strong corporate governance. He stated that self-regulation is necessary for keeping government intervention minimal, which requires sound audits and financial discipline.

Minister Goyal Highlights Competitive Gaps

Union Minister Piyush Goyal, during the Startup Mahakumbh inauguration, observed that while Indian startups are excelling in rapid delivery services, countries like China are advancing in deep tech and innovation. He echoed the sentiment that India’s startup ecosystem must move beyond short-term trends and engage with long-term technology development.
