Adani Vizhinjam Port has created a shining example of women empowerment with its women crane operators, breaking new ground in India’s maritime industry. A team of nine female crane operators, including seven from Vizhinjam, now manages the yard cranes (CRMG) at the port. In total, there are 20 crane operators working at the Vizhinjam Port.

For the first time in India, women have taken charge of operating automated CRMG cranes at a port. The women who are a part of this pioneering team include P. Prinu, S. Anisha, L. Sunita Raj, D.R. Steffi Rabeera, R.N. Rajitha, P. Ashalakshmi, A.V. Sreedevi, L. Karthika, and J.D. Nathana Mary, all of whom hail from Vizhinjam, Kottappuram, and Poovar. Some of them even come from fishing families.

The job they have undertaken requires high levels of expertise and skill. The operation of the yard cranes, which move containers within the port yard, is managed through an advanced remote desk system in the operation center.

These women operators hold science degrees and postgraduate qualifications and underwent specialized training under the Adani Skill Development Center, in collaboration with the Adani Foundation, before starting their work.

This significant achievement not only highlights the growing presence of women in technical fields but also marks a crucial step toward gender inclusivity in the port operations sector in India.
