India’s low-cost carriers, including IndiGo, Air India Express, SpiceJet, and Akasa, are expected to lead operations at the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. Developed by billionaire Gautam Adani, the airport is set for a May opening. While full-service carrier Air India will initially continue at the existing Mumbai airport, it will gradually shift domestic flights to the new facility.

A Landmark Infrastructure Project
The $2.1 billion Navi Mumbai International Airport is designed to ease congestion at Mumbai’s current airport and establish itself as a global transit hub. The Adani Group, which manages both airports, is in talks with airlines about flight slots and incentives to encourage relocation. Authorities also plan to develop an “aero city” around the airport to boost non-aviation revenue.
Connectivity Challenges
One of the key hurdles for the new airport is its lack of high-speed transport links to Mumbai’s main airport. A metro line is in the works, but it will take several years to complete. The limited connectivity could impact passenger preference, making incentives on airport fees a crucial factor for airlines.
Capacity and Future Expansion
The Navi Mumbai airport will initially have one terminal with a capacity of 20 million passengers per year. If demand grows, it will be expanded in phases to accommodate up to 90 million passengers over the next decade. The airport’s terminal, designed in the shape of a lotus, reflects India’s national flower.

Test Flights and Airline Partnerships
IndiGo conducted the airport’s first validation flight in December 2023. Air India is scheduled to test a dual-aisle aircraft in April to assess preparedness for international operations. Adani Airports is also in discussions with Star Alliance to shift its airline members’ operations to Navi Mumbai.
A Critical Moment for Adani Group
The final phase of the Navi Mumbai Airport project will be a significant test for the Adani Group, which has positioned itself as a leader in India’s infrastructure sector. The group’s ability to complete this high-stakes project successfully will further establish its credentials in large-scale developments.
