On July 31, 1995, India’s telecommunications landscape was forever changed with the first-ever mobile phone call. This historic moment saw West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu and Union Communication Minister Sukh Ram connected via a Nokia handset, marking the beginning of a new era in communication.
The Call That Started It All
The call, made possible by the Modi Telstra network, a joint venture between BK Modi and Australia’s Telstra, linked Kolkata and New Delhi. At that time, mobile communication was a luxury, with call rates set at Rs 8.4 per minute, and even higher at Rs 16.8 during peak hours. As a result, mobile phones were accessible to only a few.
Transformation of India’s Mobile Landscape
Over time, the telecom sector has undergone a revolutionary transformation. The entry of Jio in 2016 was a game-changer, offering affordable data plans that made mobile services accessible to millions across the country. The once-expensive mobile phone is now an essential part of daily life, with affordable rates, better connectivity, and advanced features.

India’s journey from the first mobile call to today’s world of seamless connectivity reflects both technological growth and the democratisation of communication, showcasing how far the country has come in the mobile space.
