Nayanthara, the ‘Lady Superstar,’ recently posted a heartfelt open letter on Instagram, criticising actor-filmmaker Dhanush for blocking the use of elements from their 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in her upcoming Netflix documentary. The documentary, which is set to explore her life and love story with filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, includes personal memories from various films, but Dhanush’s refusal to grant permission for the use of the song and visuals from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan has become a point of contention. Nayanthara claims that Dhanush’s decision is rooted in a personal grudge against her and her husband, accusing him of asking for an unreasonable Rs 10 crore fee for just a three-second clip from the film.

Background of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan and Nayanthara’s Relationship with Dhanush

The controversy stems from the 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films. Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi starred in the lead roles, and the movie became a major success. Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan’s love story blossomed during the making of the film, with Vignesh recalling how Dhanush played a role in bringing them together. Despite their professional relationship, Nayanthara recalled Dhanush’s dissatisfaction with her performance in the film during her Filmfare Award acceptance speech, which added further tension to their relationship.

In her open letter, Nayanthara expressed deep frustration over Dhanush’s refusal to allow the use of the Naanum Rowdy Dhaan song and visuals, calling it a personal attack. She revealed that they had been fighting for two years to secure the necessary No Objection Certificate (NOC), only for Dhanush to decline repeatedly. Nayanthara highlighted the emotional significance of the film’s music and how its refusal had broken her heart. While she acknowledged that business concerns might be a factor, she accused Dhanush of letting personal feelings influence his decision.

Legal Threats and Accusations of ‘Schadenfreude’

The situation worsened when Dhanush issued a legal notice after the release of the documentary trailer, claiming damages of Rs 10 crore for the unauthorised use of a three-second BTS clip. Nayanthara referred to this demand as a “low” blow, accusing Dhanush of being vindictive and questioning his character. She also accused him of harbouring a long-standing grudge, referencing how Dhanush’s displeasure over the film’s success had been evident at award functions. Nayanthara advised Dhanush to practise what he preaches in public, criticising his lack of moral decency in handling the situation.

A Call for Peace and Understanding

Nayanthara concluded her letter by urging Dhanush to find peace with the success of others, particularly those who may not come from film backgrounds but still manage to make a mark in the industry. She emphasised the importance of spreading love and support, offering the hope that one day Dhanush would be able to embrace this mindset as well.

The controversy surrounding Dhanush and Nayanthara’s professional relationship has become a hot topic among fans and the film industry alike. Despite the ongoing conflict, Nayanthara remains focused on her upcoming Netflix documentary, which will be released on November 18 to coincide with her birthday.
