Google.org has granted $1 million to the non-profit Karya to provide AI job opportunities to low-income communities globally. This funding aims to equip tens of thousands of individuals with digital skills required for tasks like data annotation and AI training, focusing on underserved regions in India.
Karya’s AI Skill Development Program
With this grant, Karya plans to create an accessible AI skilling pathway that combines a research-driven curriculum and hands-on learning. The program is designed to cater to those with limited digital experience, aligning with India’s goal of building an AI-ready workforce. Additionally, course materials will be available in 10 major Indic languages to improve accessibility.
Generative AI for Multilingual Support
Karya will also leverage generative AI to create a multilingual chatbot that provides real-time support for workers using its digital platform. This feature will help users navigate digital tasks in various languages, catering to local needs.
Google’s Commitment to AI Education
Alex Diaz, Head of AI for Social Good at Google.org, expressed the company’s dedication to providing AI opportunities to underserved communities, stating that this partnership is a significant step toward making AI beneficial for everyone, regardless of background. Google’s recent initiatives, including the AI Skills House and a $4 million donation to the Central Square Foundation, reinforce the company’s commitment to expanding AI education.
Karya’s Impact and Future Plans
Karya’s CEO, Manu Chopra, emphasised the organisation’s dedication to equitable AI development, believing that low-income communities are not just beneficiaries but also key contributors to AI development. Already, Karya’s platform has created job opportunities for over 50,000 people in rural India, with plans to expand to over 100,000 individuals.
This partnership highlights the potential of AI to drive economic and social progress in underserved regions, complementing Google’s broader strategy to support AI education worldwide.
