Foxconn is considering a $1 billion investment to set up a smartphone display module assembly unit in Tamil Nadu. This would be the first facility of its kind in India, primarily catering to Apple for iPhone production.
Foxconn’s new facility may also support other manufacturers, like Pegatron and Tata Electronics, allowing them to use locally produced components instead of importing from China.
There is no fixed timeline for the project, but sources say Foxconn wants the unit running “as soon as possible.”
Experts believe this move will push India up the value chain in electronics manufacturing, adding 2-3% more local value through display assembly.
Foxconn’s expansion in India includes plans to assemble Google Pixel phones, and it is also looking to enter sectors like electric vehicles, batteries, and semiconductors.
India currently imports most of its display modules from China and South Korea, but local assembly could reduce costs and supply chain delays.
Challenges may arise from component supply issues and the lack of skilled labour for advanced display technologies in India.
