Bengaluru has unveiled South India’s inaugural underground air-conditioned market, named ‘Palike Bazaar,’ marking a significant urban development milestone. The market was inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Vijayanagar MLA M Krishnappa, highlighting the region’s push towards modern infrastructure.

Project Overview

The ‘Palike Bazaar’ is situated adjacent to the Vijayanagar metro station and bus stand, covering a total area of 1,365 square metres. Modelled after New Delhi’s renowned Palika Bazaar, this Rs 13-crore project boasts a total of 79 shops. The market features central air-conditioning, with 31 shops having individual air-conditioning units, enhancing comfort for both vendors and shoppers.

Development and Funding

The development of the market was initiated by Parichita Constructions, a private firm, with funding allocated by the BBMP. Initially, Rs 5 crore was allocated for the project in 2017-18, followed by an additional Rs 8 crore in 2021-22. The first phase of the project, which includes 40 shops, was completed in 2022, but the market’s opening was delayed to complete the second phase of construction.

Features and Facilities

The underground market is equipped with eight entrances, 145 lights, two escalators, one lift, and safety features such as fire extinguishers and a power transformer. Its design aims to alleviate the congestion caused by street vendors on the roads above, providing a more organized and comfortable shopping environment.

Community Impact

The establishment of the Palike Bazaar is intended to benefit both local traders and residents. MLA M Krishnappa mentioned that the market was inspired by his visit to Delhi’s Palika Bazaar. The new facility aims to address issues faced by vegetable vendors and street traders, providing them with a dedicated space while improving the conditions for pedestrians and local businesses.

Future Plans

Krishnappa also highlighted ongoing and future projects, including upgrades to Kanaka Bhavan, the construction of a sports complex at JP Park, and new developments like Valmiki Bhavan and Kempegowda Bhavan. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah praised the initiative, suggesting that similar underground markets could be developed elsewhere in Bengaluru to help decongest city roads.

The opening of the Palike Bazaar represents a forward-thinking approach to urban market infrastructure in Bengaluru. With its modern amenities and strategic location, it aims to provide a more organised shopping experience while addressing local congestion issues.
