IIT-Madras Announces New BSc-BEd Programme to Enhance Math Education

IIT-Madras Announces BSc-BEd Program to Train Quality Math Teachers, Retains NIRF Top Rank, and Enhances Research and Student Wellness Efforts

IIT-Madras will introduce a BSc-BEd programme next year, focusing on producing high-quality math teachers. This initiative, revealed by Director V Kamakoti, aligns with the institute’s ongoing efforts to strengthen educational outcomes and retain its leading position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

Goals for the Coming Year

In addition to the new BSc-BEd programme, IIT-Madras plans to introduce a BSc degree in mathematics and computing and a BEd degree in collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). The goal is to produce around 500 skilled math teachers annually. The institute will also bolster its School of Interdisciplinary Studies, offering MTech and PhD programmes, and continue its ‘Startup 100’ initiative, aiming to launch a new startup every three days. A cultural quota for artists is also being considered for admissions.

Retaining NIRF Top Rank

IIT-Madras has maintained its top spot in the NIRF overall and engineering categories, marking six and nine consecutive years at the top, respectively. Kamakoti attributed this success to the focus on research and innovation, new departments in medical sciences, AI, and data analytics, as well as the introduction of sports quotas and online degree programmes. The inclusive nature of the campus also contributes to this achievement.

Challenges in Attracting Top JEE Rankers

Despite its top rankings, IIT-Madras faces challenges in attracting the top 100 JEE rankers, who often prefer IIT Bombay due to its geographical location and cosmopolitan appeal. Kamakoti acknowledged that while IIT-Madras attracts the same number of students as IIT Bombay among the top 500 rankers, the legacy and cultural aspects of Mumbai present challenges.

Enhancing Placement and Student Wellness

IIT-Madras has addressed concerns about placement by achieving over 90% placement for students last year. This year, the placement team is expanding its outreach to more companies and providing ample internship opportunities. The institute is also focused on student wellness, conducting surveys to identify and support vulnerable students, offering extra vacation, and ensuring accessible support through the ombudsman.

Aiming for Global Recognition

IIT-Madras is also working to improve its global standing. While NIRF rankings align with national priorities, Kamakoti noted that global rankings like QS World University Rankings place more weight on international perception. The institute aims to break into the top 100 world university rankings through consistent performance and improvements.
