The Government of India has introduced the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF), a prestigious program designed to support and inspire students pursuing Ph.D. degrees in Science and Technology fields. This fellowship offers significant financial aid and motivation for eligible candidates.

Eligibility Criteria:

Students who can apply for the PMRF include:

  • Final-year students of 4/5-year undergraduate programs, 5-year integrated M.Tech programs, 2-year M.Sc programs, or 5-year dual degree programs in Science and Technology from IISc, IITs, NITs, IISERs, IIEST, and centrally funded IIITs.
  • Candidates must have a minimum CGPA/CPI of 8.0 on a 10-point scale.
  • Students who have qualified GATE or completed M.Tech/MS with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 after the first year are also eligible.

Fellowship Benefits:

The PMRF offers a substantial fellowship to selected students:

  • INR 70,000 per month for the first two years.
  • INR 75,000 per month in the third year.
  • INR 80,000 per month in the fourth and fifth years.
  • Additionally, a research grant of INR 2 lakh per year is provided for five years, totaling INR 10 lakh.

Application Process:

There is no direct application portal for the PMRF. Interested students need to follow these steps:

1.     Apply for a Ph.D. Program: Candidates must apply for a regular doctoral program at an institution offering PMRF fellowships, such as IISc, IITs, etc. Admission to the Ph.D. program is essential for consideration.

2.     Selection Process: After being selected for the Ph.D. program, the institution will nominate eligible candidates for the PMRF.

3.     Expert Panel Review: A panel of experts will review the nominations and decide on the fellowship awards.

Important Points:

  • There is no quota reservation for PMRF 2024.
  • Selection is based on merit and a rigorous evaluation process.
