Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has begun testing the world’s first 3D-printed electric abra, a major advancement in marine transport. This new boat can carry 20 passengers and retains the traditional abra design, developed in partnership with private companies.
Supporting Dubai’s 3D Printing Goals
This project supports Dubai’s 3D printing strategy by aiming to reduce manufacturing time by 90%, cut costs by 30%, and lower operational expenses by 30%. It also aligns with RTA’s goals for environmental sustainability in maritime transport.
Key Features of the Electric Abra
Mattar Al Tayer, RTA’s Director General, highlighted that this trial is part of a larger plan to improve marine transport services in Dubai. The electric abra features the longest monocoque structure made with 3D printing, measuring 11 meters long and 3.1 meters wide. It is powered by two electric motors and will be tested at the Sheikh Zayed Road Marine Transport Station on the TR6 line.
Collaborative Manufacturing Process
The abra was produced by Al Seer Marine Company in Abu Dhabi, with materials supplied by Mitsubishi (Japan), printer supervision from Siemens (Germany), and electric motors from Torqeedo (Germany). TASNEEF Company ensured the manufacturing met safety standards.
Upgrading Traditional Abra Stations
RTA is also working to upgrade traditional abra stations along Dubai Creek to enhance safety, accessibility, and aesthetics. These stations serve over 14 million passengers each year. The upgrades will improve four stations, with Bur Dubai Marine Transport Station completed in February 2023 and Deira Old Souq Station upgraded last February. Improvements for Dubai Old Souq Station and Al Sabkha Station are expected by August 2025.
Enhancements for Better Service
The upgrades include replacing floating docks for passenger safety, adding retail spaces, and providing facilities for staff and bike racks. Waiting areas will be expanded with priority seating for People of Determination, and there will be more shaded waiting areas and commercial spaces.
Growth of the Marine Transport Sector
The marine transport sector in Dubai has been growing since the completion of the Dubai Water Canal, which connects Dubai Creek to the coast. The introduction of the 3D-printed electric abra is set to further boost this growth.
