Coconut is an important part of Kerala’s food, tourism and agricultural economy. But the growing consumption of tender coconuts also generates significant organic waste, much of which ends up discarded along roadsides and in public spaces.

Addressing this challenge is Pocket Grover, an innovative agricultural startup based in Karingannoor, Kollam. Founded by Shanu Manoharan and Jisha S.J., the venture converts discarded tender coconut waste into nutrient-rich, soil-free potting mixes for vegetables, fruits and ornamental plants.
Pocket Grover was developed in response to two challenges: the improper disposal of coconut waste and the growing demand for high-quality planting media. The venture combines organic inputs sourced directly from farmers with scientifically formulated potting mixes.
The founders began their agricultural journey by leasing fallow land in the region and experimenting with scientific banana cultivation. Their early experience helped them understand how farming could become a viable and sustainable source of income.
They later established a vermicomposting facility after receiving training from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Kollam. By efficiently processing agricultural residues, they began producing and marketing premium-grade vermicompost.
However, limited awareness among small farmers about organic fertilisers and soil health presented challenges. This led the founders to explore scientifically formulated, high-quality planting media that could offer farmers a more reliable growing solution.
This journey eventually led to Pocket Grover’s focus on converting coconut waste into soil-free growing media. The startup is incubated at K-AgTech Launchpad, the Rural Business Incubation Centre at the College of Agriculture, supported by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
Pocket Grover won first place at the Srishti Ideathon, organised by the College of Agriculture under Kerala Agricultural University, Vellayani. The startup was recognised for giving discarded coconut husks found along roadsides an environmentally friendly second life.
The venture now offers a range of natural and sustainable products, from cow-dung manure and vermicompost to organic boosters and premium potting mixes. Its products are also available through online platforms including Flipkart and Amazon.
Pocket Grover’s approach demonstrates how agricultural waste can be transformed into useful products while supporting sustainable farming and creating new opportunities within Kerala’s growing agri-startup ecosystem.
